Is there anything better for an almost three-year-old than making a tremendous artistic mess? The correct answer is, "No. There's not."
Trust me, there is nothing my little Boo loves more than being given permission to go crazy* with something like play-dough or paints. So, naturally, finger-painting is right up her ally.
This recipe is great for a couple of reasons. First: it is super easy to make and comes out perfectly (providing you follow the instructions).
Second: It's made of food-grade ingredients that you probably already have lying around in your kitchen pantry, so you know exactly what's in it. This also means it's non-toxic, so even though it tastes just terrible, if your kids happen to ingest some (as kids are known to do) you don't have to panic or rush to find the number for poison control.
So, without further ado, I give you: finger-paints!
Ingredients
1/2 cup cornstarch
3 TBSP. sugar
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups cold water
food coloring
3 TBSP. sugar
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups cold water
food coloring
1. In a medium pan, mix all the ingredients together.
2. Cook over low heat 10 to 15 minutes. Be warned: it’s very important that you keep stirring this mixture of fledgling finger-paint as it cooks and watch for the moment it changes from thin to thick. When it changes to a thicker consistency, remove it from the heat IMMEDIATELY!
Failure to do so will result in over-cooked finger-paint with an undesirably thick, even lumpy, texture. Trust me. I've made this goof myself and the result wasn't pretty. You have been warned...
3. Allow the mixture to cool and then portion it out into small bowls or plastic containers.
4. Add food coloring to each portion and mix. A few drops goes a long way!
5. Viola! You've made finger-paint! Isn't that something?
Now, go make a tremendous artistic mess of your own!**
*And I do mean crazy, so if your kids are like mine, be sure to tape down a plastic garbage bag as a work station and outfit your little ones in over-sized t-shirts to minimize the mess factor.
**Note: These finger-paints will keep for a few days if kept in air-tight containers. After that, they begin to harden.
